Unreal was released on April 30, 1998 by GT Interactive. The game was developed by Epic Games. Unreal is a first person shooter.

The player takes on the role of prisoner 849. The transport crashes on an unknown planet. The ship ended up on the lip of a canyon on the planet Na Pali, home of the Nali, a primitive tribal race of four-armed humanoids.

The Nali and their planet have been subjugated by the Skaarj, a race of brutish yet technologically advanced reptilian humanoids. Skaarj troopers board the downed Vortex Rikers and kill the remaining survivors, except for Prisoner 849, who manages to find a weapon and escape from the ship.

The game was seen as a serious contender vs Quake II. The improvements in rendering and gameplay are obvious. We like competition which leads to more and more innovations.

Return to Na Pali was released on June 1999 by Legend Entertainment.

Unreal Gold includes the original game and the Return to Na Pali expansion.

There is an authorized community built patch for the game at oldunreal.com. Patch 227 ads more screen resolutions for modern systems.

The patch also includes many extensive performance optimizations, better rendering, supplementary graphical features like character shadows and blood/projectile decals (nothing which compromises the original feel of Unreals’ game/gunplay), expanded capabilities for modding/mapping/content creation, the ability to access the multiplayer portion of the game after the gamespy shutdown and extensive translation localizations.
