Arx Fatalis was released on November 12, 2002 byJoWood Productions. The game was developed by Arkane Studios. Arx Fatalis is a role playing game.

Arx Fatalis is played from the first person perspective which is not very common in the role playing genre. The game mixes intelligent story with immersive and actual medieval surroundings. Arx Fatalis allows the player to feel that all his actions have a direct consequence on those around him.

The goal of the game is to destroy the secret cult of Akbaa, the god of destruction. As a player, you must prevent the return of such a cruel creature to the physical world. Should you fail, Akbaa is bound to impose its terror upon the world of Arx.

The game is relatively open ended. the player to allocate skill points for the character type such as spellcasting, weapons and armor, stealth, and so on. There are several side quests that can be undertaken too.

The game has a simple crafting which involves enchanting ammunition and weapons, or creating items, such as a fishing rod (fishing pole and rope) and so on.

Raw food can be cooked, like rounds of bread, chicken drumsticks, or pies. The main plotline is non-linear with the player collecting the various items to forge a sword required to defeat Akbaa in a final showdown.

There is no real dialog in the game. interactions are comparatively action driven. There is no fixed way to finish the game and there is many ways to do it.

The spellcasting is probably the best part of the game. Using the mouse and the control key, runes are then drawn in the air on screen. If done properly the speed is cast. The player can find or buy different runes as gameplay progresses, combinations of which unlock new spells.
