Arcade games emerged in the mid 1970s as an alternative to pinball machines, bowling and snooker etc. The cabinet machines were expensive but into the 1980 the money being earned by the machines was hard to resist. Pong was the first arcade game to be seen. The success of Taito’s Space Invaders is legendary. By 1981, the arcade video game industry was worth $8 billion. Even the high interest rates did not slow the growth in cabinet arcade gaming. The 25 cents per play was the most common but some games were more expensive. Following the video game crash in 1983 the cabinet game industry slowly very little and regained its growth in 1985.
