The Acer AL1916 is a basic 19-inch LCD panel. When it was first released, the Acer AL1916 would have been considered a mainstream display. Today its lack of digital (DVI) interface is a real detriment. The MSRP is $199.

The AL1916 has a thin-bezel design with a basic black finish. A hinged stand supports the 1,280-by-1,024 resolution panel, providing 20 degrees of tilt but no height or swivel adjustments.

Five silver buttons located along the lower edge of the display are extremely difficult to identify because their labels are black-on-black.

Only the Auto control is a hotkey, which when pressed automatically adjusts the clock, focus, and image position. The menu button lets you manually adjust color temperature, brightness, focus, and other image-quality settings via an convenient on-screen menu system.

Playing games with it did not present any serious problems. We played several recent games such as Metro 2033 and the AL1916 is bright enough for dark tunnels.

The AL1916 can do a reasonable job emulating a CRT during the boot into Windows. Even the BIOS is shown full screen fine with no problems. Works fine with our KVM switch as well.

This panel has been a stalwart of reliability. After a decade of service it still works properly.

We find that LCD panels are generally cleaner than the older CRT screens. This can be explained by the use of high voltage in the CRT that can create static charge that cause dust to cling to the surface. The LCD does not use high voltage so dust is not attracted to the screen.
