Prey was released July 11, 2006 by 2K Games. The game was developed by Human Head Studios and 3D Realms. Prey is a first person shooter.
Prey is developed using the famous id Tech 4 engine.
This game uses disc checks and Securom, Macromedia, Starforce, Tagès and other protection systems are being rejected by Windows Vista, 7, 8 and 10 for security reasons (KB3086255).
Prey is an easy ride through an alien world that doesn’t cash in on all its potential but still offers enough thrills to make it worthwhile buying.
Any of the game’s ideas were originally hatched a decade ago. The game was even shown off to press in 1997. But in 1998, Prey was canned so that the development team could move on to other projects, and it was assumed lost.
Prey resurfaced with a new developer and new technology thanks to the engine that powered both Doom 3 and Quake 4. The popular Doom 3 engine has gone on to power many popular games including Prey.
The two things that seem meant to separate Prey from its rivals are the game’s liberal use of portals that bring you from place to place and a bag of gravity tricks that are meant to keep you wondering which way is up.
The story focuses on Domasi Tawodi (also known as “Tommy”), a Cherokee garage mechanic and former U.S. Army soldier living on a Native American reservation in Oklahoma.
At the beginning of the game, Tommy is in a bar owned by his girlfriend, Jen. Tommy is tired of living on the reservation, and constantly tries to push his heritage away, while at the same time trying to convince Jen to leave home, if only for a short while, to which she refuses steadfastly.
After an unfortunate bar fight, the entire building is lifted up by a gravitational force into a green light above. A cut scene shows Tommy moving through an alien spacecraft.
The game starts with a few segments to help the player understand the special powers that Tommy will be using. This training is necessary as some of the special powers are needed to play onwards.
Portals are used to delineate each part of the game map.
No question that Human Head was able to do such a good job. They crafted a larger story to fit their idea for the vision and the flow of the game, No question that they executed the task to make Prey a respectable release that was completely modern in look and feel.
- Unique gameplay elements, such as gravity flipping, wall-walking and deathwalk, create an incredibly original first-person shooter experience.
- Portal technology allows enemies to appear out of thin air, creating new and completely original puzzles and gameplay techniques.
- Highly organic, living environment that is an enemy to the player.
- In single-player mode, spirit hawk allows you to decipher the spaceship’s alien language and find advantages in battle.
- Built on an enhanced Doom 3 engine, the most impressive 3D engine used in a released game.
Steam accepts a box retail key if you wish to move your license to their client. This removes the CD checks. Steam also includes the game patches. Unfortunately the game is not longer being offered on Steam. In late 2016 we noticed an announcement of a new unrelated game Prey expected in 2017.
CUSTOM RESOLUTION FIX
First you should set in the game the right aspect ratio. Which depends on your monitor. Normally it would be 16:9.
Got to “Steam/SteamApps/common/Prey 2006/base” directory and edit the file “preyconfig.cfg”:
Set following properties:
seta r_customHeight “1080”
seta r_customWidth “1920”
seta r_mode “-1”
Make sure you do not modify the settings again as this will revert the game. It’s too bad the developer was not able to tweak the game to support modern panels, there is no rendering issues with higher resolutions.
