AMD’s new Accelerated Processing Units (APU) are a new design that some consumers are not clear about. The APU is a combined CPU with an elementary GPU mostly for mobile use.

Starting with the AMD LLano APU, the desktop platform started to receive mobile class processors with integrated graphics. Now APU users with a basic video card can use both for improved gaming.

AMD’s drivers support using both the APU and the GPU combined to handle the primary display. The design is intended to provide more GFLOPS for rendering.

AMD has both Hybrid Graphics and Hybrid CrossfireX depending on the model of APU and GPU in use.
