Dark Souls was released on October 4, 2011 by Namco Bandai. The game was developed by FromSoftware. Dark Souls is a third person action role playing game. The remastered version of this game was released on Steam on May 23, 2018.

The core of the game is exploration. Players are encouraged by the game to proceed with caution, learn from past mistakes, or find alternate areas to explore.

The game offers a large open world design. Players are able to travel to and from areas and explore various paths at will, although certain prerequisites have to be met in order to unlock certain areas.

Bonfires are central to the game. They act as checkpoints to give the player some frame of reference. When rested at a bonfire, the player is healed to full, healing charges are restored, but all of the enemies (except for bosses, mini-bosses, and specific characters) respawn. While resting, players can level up and perform other key functions.

The game uses a humanity system that swings from human to hollow form. When a player dies, they are returned in hollow form. The human form is restored by consuming an item.

The game world is definitely novel and the use of the hollow and human form give the game a new for role playing. The game has developed a small but active cult following.

This game has surfaced on Steam as Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition. The developer also removed Games for Windows Live and added Steamworks.
