YAHOO CLOSES ALTAVISTA

Yahoo has finally closed Altavista. They bought full width search engine back in 2003. Now the domain simply redirects to Yahoo.com and the old site now offline.

Altavista was established in 1995 but competition from Google was insurmountable.

Altavista was using 20 servers based on the DEC Alpha 64-bit processors to handle the search. Together, the back-end machines had 130 GB of RAM and 500 GB of hard disk drive space, and received about 13 million queries every day.

Another distinguishing feature of AltaVista was its basic interface, which was lost when it became a Web portal, but regained when it refocused its efforts on its search function. It also allowed the user to limit search results from a domain, reducing the likelihood of multiple results from the same source.
