Gigabyte uses ferrite core coils to eliminate hum. Solid capacitors are used to ensure a very long service life. Gold plated, durable large contact area connectors have been used for optimum signal transfer between connections.
The GTX 750 along with the GTX 750 Ti are the first of the new Maxwell series of video cards from NVIDIA. The GTX 750 has one of the SMM modules disabled (binned).
Gigabyte provides double the VRAM of the reference card. The gives the GV-N750OC-2GI a leg up on rival cards. Realistically only a few games need more than 1024MB VRAM when played at 1920xs1080 which is the target resolution for the GTX 750.
The new polymorph engine in the GM107 is a big improvement. Nvidia worked very hard to make the Maxwell architecture as energy efficient as possible. Maxwell is about 60% better than Kepler.
NVIDIA is supporting WDDM 2.5 which means all Windows 10 features will work fully including DX12. NVENC is close to double the performance compared to Kepler which will appeal to those who do a lot of video transcoding. NVIDIA Maxwell is best with H.264 for 1920×1080 video encoding.
The lack of a DisplayPort connection does limit the card’s ability to handle 4K video. The HDMI 1.4 is not fast enough for 4K60 so dual HDMI connections will be needed. The GTX 750 is best off for gaming at 1920×1080 which is what it was designed for.
The GM107 is so powerful it can outmuscle even the GF100 (GTX 480). The reference GTX 750 can use the slot power but Gigabyte chose to use a PCI Express 6-pin connector to allow the card more headroom for overclocking. This means the GTX 750 uses less than half the power of the GTX 480 for the same level of performance.
Idle power is improved over Kepler. At idle the card uses 0.8W of power which is about 2% of TDP. The BIOS has a maximum of 38.5W of power but the boost feature can go over that when pushed.
The Gigabyte GTX 750 did not fare well with the Furmark fuzzy donut in the stress test. The card is easily fixed as the design is very open and there are only 4 screws are easy to get at. See our page on video card overheating. We use Arctic MX-4 which is much more effective and it seems to last for many years.
After refurbishing the card, the Furmark went from 7 fps and thermal throttling to 23 fps and stable. After 2 hours the temperature never rose above 65°C which is well below the thermal throttle level. MX-4 1, thermal pad 0.
RESIDENT EVIL 6 BENCHMARK
The GTX 750 was able to achieve an A rating which means that the game will run very well even at 1920×1080. Clearly even the entry level Maxwell card is very powerful.
Gamers will like the GTX 750 as it has the ability to play a vast number of games. Given the card is 300x more powerful than the old Xbox it can play all of that class of game at 1920×1080 without worry. Halo: Combat Evolved is the most well known Xbox classic.
Xbox 360 class games will also be very playable as the GTX 750 again outperforms it handily. Crysis can be played at 1920×1080 easily with the Gigabyte GTX 750 2GB.
Benchmarks indicate it largely surpasses the Radeon R7 260, while factory overclocked versions will surpass the Radeon R7 260X, especially in DirectX 11 based games.
For more demanding contemporary games 1280×720 can often get a game working a lot better. Consoles do the same thing with many games so PC gaming can learn from console game developers.
Rage is one of the most demanding games we have. We played the 64-bit version and the GTX 750 struggled to make the game playable at 1920×1080 on max settings.
