AMD has now released some new slides so we can now post a better view of the new 14nm processor. Now that AMD is supporting DDR4, the RAM industry will likely more eagerly move to the new platform over the next 2 years. AMD Zen will be sold to gamers and corporate users alike. The slides came from a corporate dog and pony show with an editorial for gamers.. The server board had 2 sockets and the processors were 8 core with 16 threads each. Gaming boxes need one CPU but having 16 threads would rival Intel’s best X99 i7-6900s,

The 2D2801A2M88EA will be the 8 core 16 thread CPU with 95W TDP and a base clock of 2.8 GHz and turbo clock of 3.2 GHz. The 2D2802A2M4KE4 will have 4 cores and 8 threads with a TDP of 65W.

Both chips bear the Zeppelin code name. This suggests two different configurations of Summit Ridge CPUs rather than an eight core Summit Ridge CPU and a quadcore Raven Ridge APU.


The Zen CPU has some material improvements. The data cache is now 32KB and the instruction cache is now 64KB. The 512KB L2 cache helps improve the throughput nicely. The 8MB L3 cache is large enough to run Windows 10 easily. DX12 is likely to be able to easily leverage the new Zen cores efficiently.


The new larger caches also have a wider instruction instruction window. This helps with out or order instruction streams which improves overall throughput.. Zen has a couple of GCN cores beside the ALU which will help with a richer instruction set that is tightly coupled to the CPU core. This will help with mobile machines which tend to use system on a chip solutions.


AMD has make many improvement to the CPU core but they have also managed to improve power management. Lots of chips these days have power options. There’s no numbers yet for the packages’ power consumption, although they are described as having “competitive TDP.”.


No question that AMD’s new Zen will be a popular with gamers. The idea is to refresh the product line and give gamers are platform that will be viable for the next 5 years or so.


AMD Promontory chipset will be rather feature-rich: it will connect to processors using PCI Express 3.0 x4 bus (up to 4GB/s of bandwidth) and will support USB 3.1, USB 3.0 and USB 2.0 ports; one PCI Express 2.0 general-purpose port for various controllers; Serial ATA-6Gb/s and SATA Express port(s). The 16 lanes of PCI Express are suitable for 2-way motherboards which is similar to Intel’s Z170.

The small size of M.2 makes it easy to place between slots. The bandwidth is also much higher then SATA.
