In recent quarters, more and more publishers and now demanding that players signup with the publishers servers. The majority of games on Steam continue to use Steamworks and the Steam store which simplifies development.

Origin started off strong but after a period of time they slowed development to a crawl. Origin does have a few third party games for sale.

Perfect World also offers games on Steam and their game client offers many more free to play games.

Uplay still sells games on Steam but now players are obliged to install Ubisoft’s client. Uplay has given players many free games in a bid to make the platform more respectable.

Most recently several independent developers are now using their own servers.

The likely cause of the fragmentation, Steam has become far too expensive. The concern is sale of account information, especially with Steam linked accounts. More troubling is the possibility of malware on third party servers.
