The PC gaming world saw a lot change. 2016 saw explosive growth in free to play games.
UNIVERSAL WINDOWS GAMES
The biggest one is the rise of the universal Windows platform which is Microsoft’s latest middleware effort. So many layers of middleware and games do not run well. Microsoft wants to make more game available for the Xbox One.
- Forza Horizon
- Halo 5 Forge
- Gears of War 4
NO MAN’S SKY
No Man’s Sky really made a mess of marketing. The howls of complaints were so loud that the developer had to crawl under a rock and work on a patch for the game.
Now a lot of game publishers are rethinking what to post on Steam etc for screenshots and video.
We generally use a single image from the game, which is generally enough for judging the quality of the artwork and game rendering etc. The old adage that a picture is worth a thousand works still apples.
STEAM EARLY ACCESS
Steam’s early access has been a mixed bag too. Some games were successfully completed. Most were simply abandoned. Many were free to play.
Free to play has relied on selling expansions and DLC using the core game as free entry.
Ashes of the Singularity has been the most successful early access game.
Again, a few games that were expected to be released in the fall of 2016 but never managed to get ready for release.
Many major AAA titles are delayed for anyone of several reasons. Many games are released throughout the year and miss the important holiday season.
