We have received notice that Steam and Humble will both start collecting consumption takes on game sales. It’s not yet known if GOG will also be collecting taxes.

New Zealand, Japan, South Korea, Iceland, South Africa and India will have Steam purchases taxed starting March 1, 2017.

Australia will begin on July 1, 2017. Right now Steam does not show prices in Australian dollars for Australian purchasers so taxation will be complicated.

  • Australia 10%
  • Germany 20%
  • Iceland 24%
  • India 13.5%
  • Japan 8%
  • New Zealand 16%
  • South Africa 15%
  • South Korea 10%

It seems that the tax breaks for internet businesses has largely disappeared as more and more sovereigns look to recover sagging revenue streams. The US is the only G7 country that does not have a federal consumption tax. Seems that dodging taxes by corporations is getting harder to pull off.

Bangladesh reduced the VAT for computer equipment in a push towards modernization. World tax policies are very diverse.
