Step into the world of 4K ultra high-definition in an affordable way. This new 50-inch smart TV from RCA lets you do just that, giving you access to all of your favourite apps and streaming services while delivering a picture quality that ranks among the best in the market. The brightly lit LED panel makes each microscopic pixel light up in stunning colour and contrast. So whether you want to catch up on your Netflix list or just sit back with a video game, this sizable screen is both a beauty and a big-time bargain.

The lack of bluetooth for speakers is a nuisance. A bluetooth keyboard would make life easier with the bundled apps. The optical output can be connected to a receiver. The VGA and 3.5mm audio in is obsolete as most laptops support HDMI or DisplayPort. DisplayPort to HDMI cables are widely available. Connected to LAN the RCA RNSMU5036 appears as a Samsung TV suggesting the logic board was made by them. LG is know to make IPS panels for television and monitor companies in high volumes.

The Mirashare feature is properly known as Miracast which is a screen sharing feature. Windows and Apple support this to be able to use a larger television screen for video conferencing etc. Windows 10 had some trouble connecting.

The RCA Virtuoso software is pretty limited. Some basic functions such as Youtube and subscription based Netflix are present. The Virtuoso software occasionally does not load properly and the television will shut down. The remote can then attempt to power up the television where most of the time it will operate properly.

The sound quality is basic but considering the market segment it is acceptable. There is a 3.5mm audio out to support external speakers. The JBL XTREME 2 speaker works well connected to the television with a 3.5mm cable

The remote is basic but adequate. The remote code is 027D.

The bundled apps are not all available in Canada. Most users will be using a cable TV box as few live channels remain. YouTube has lots of 4V video to demonstrate the color quality etc.

Digital Cable TV in Canada is a mix widescreen 1280x720p, 1920x1080i and numerous letterboxed 480i channels. Modern digital cable boxes support 1920x1080p and all channels are rendered to be compatible. The RCA RNSMU5036 can’t do much with letterboxed 480i channels which have the poorest image quality comparable to VHS.

4K BD is now available and it is able to support 3840×2160 which is the native resolution of the RCA RNSMU5036. The cost of 4K capable BD players softened recently. Some households bought the Xbox One or PS4 to play DVD/BD media. BD media are very low cost but 4K media has taken over as the premium lineup.

The Apple TV 4K is ideal for the RCA RNSMU5036 television. The Apple TV ecosystem is rich with apps for every service out there. Plugging the Apple TV into the television worked immediately and the improved picture quality was noted immediately. Unlike the cable box, Apple TV can support 3840×2160 HDR fine.
