WD Red Hard Disk

The Western Digital Red are a standard 7200 rpm hard disk for NAS users.

There’s a leading edge WD Red drive for every compatible NAS system to store your precious data. With drives up to 6TB, WD Red offers a wide array of storage for customers looking to build a NAS solution. Built and tested for personal and home NAS systems with up to 8-bays, these drives pack all the punch you need in one powerhouse unit for storing, archiving, and sharing. With WD Red, you’re ready for what’s next.

  • Available in capacities ranging from 2-6TB with support for up to 8 bays
  • Supports up to 180 TB/yr workload rate
  • NASware firmware for compatibility
  • Small or medium business NAS systems in a 24×7 environment
  • 3-year limited warranty

The WD Red Plus hard disks are a wide range of products for NAS users. The disks are all conventional perpendicular recording media. Smaller NAS units can use the less costly 5400 rpm models while performance requirement can be met with 7200 rpm disks.

  • Supports up to 180 TB/yr workload rate

Supporting 180TB per year is not as high as server class hard disks but it is sufficient for smaller NAS use. NAS units with 8 bays tend to be less demanding compared to the larger servers. Most of the time the array is in read mode.

The WD Red 4TB disks are good performance media:

  • The WD Red averaged 150 MB/s read and 130 MB/s write (Seq. 5 tests)
  • The WD Green averaged 96 MB/s read and 88 MB/s write (Seq. 5 tests)
  • Two Seagate 4TB drives (5900 RPM) in a Raid 1 averaged 143 MB/s read and 123 MB/s write (Seq. 5 tests)

As the tests show, it outperformed the other drives, but the Seagates were definitely close and cost about 3/4 the price of the Red.

For a media server the low cost model 5400 rpm disks are fine.

Street prices have bounced around substantially. WD has managed to keep their Red line in stock as they are very popular with NAS users.
