XBOX GAMES STUDIOS

Xbox Games Studios was established in March 2000, spun out from an internal Games Group, for the development and publishing of video games for Microsoft Windows.

Generally Microsoft has now consolidated all of the gaming under the Xbox Games Studio’s which makes it easier to manage looking forward. While the console is important Xbox is also looking at the bigger picture of the entire gaming market. Xbox sold millions of copies of games when they started selling them on Steam.

At E3 2019 in L.A., Xbox’s Matt Booty announced that Microsoft has acquired Double Fine Productions, the San Francisco-based studio known for games including Psychonauts, Brutal Legend, and Broken Age, among others. Microsoft has been rebuilding its Xbox Game Studios as a way to own its own game properties as it extends its platform ambitions.

Microsoft has been less focused in recent years so they want to expand on the gaming front which management recognizes as a growing industry. The new console generation is also in deed of some new games which will require a lot of work from the teams.

Some subsidiaries like Digital Anvil are now defunct as the groups went on to other projects.

PC gaming is double the size of all consoles combined. Microsoft realizes this which is why they are now selling games on Steam which has become the popular choice regardless of their shortcomings.

Phil Spencer heads Microsoft’s Xbox Games Studios and he recognizes that the Xbox is not an island so games will be offered on a revamped Windows Store as well as on Steam. So the announcement of Halo: Master Chief Collection coming to both Steam and our store was us saying you should be able to buy the games where you want to buy them. Given how popular some Microsoft game’s are should be good news for enthusiasts.

Microsoft may release games on the Epic Games Store and other places in the future, too, though right now Steam’s the focus. EA may overhaul Origin and take another run at becoming a viable alternative to Steam.

Microsoft is working hard to make Windows an even more powerful gaming platform. The improvements in DX12 are clear that gaming has a bright future ahead of it. Xbox Games Studios demonstrates Microsoft is very serious about games.
