The upcoming Half-Life: Alyz is going to be VR only. Valve wants to push more into using VR hardware but the cost of VR is still more than the mainstream can afford.
Half-Life: Alyx is Valve’s VR return to the Half-Life series. It’s the story of an impossible fight against a vicious alien race known as the Combine, set between the events of Half-Life and Half-Life 2.
Playing as Alyx Vance, you are humanity’s only chance for survival. The Combine’s control of the planet since the Black Mesa incident has only strengthened as they corral the remaining population in cities. Among them are some of Earth’s greatest scientists: you and your father, Dr. Eli Vance.
Hammer, Valve’s level authoring tool, has been updated with all of the game’s virtual reality gameplay tools and components.
Some games support VR where available and operate in conventional mode when its not. This hybrid approach is best as it offers the option for those who own VR hardware while not punishing those who do not.
The lower cost mixed reality hardware that is supported by Windows 10 version 1909 and above is supported by Valve.
- Samsung HMD Odyssey+ Windows Mixed Reality Headset with 2 Wireless Controllers 3.5″ Black (XE800ZBA-HC1US)
- Acer (AH101-D8EY) Windows Mixed Reality Headset Model VD.R05AP.002

Virtual reality hardware is less costly than it was 2 years ago. Modern video cards like the GTX 1060 and RX 480 are adequately powerful. New modern cards are even better suited.
