Long gone are the early days when CD-R discs cost over $10 each. Now blank CD-R discs are less than 2 cents each. DVD-R are not far behind at about 5 cents each. BD25 prices have also fallen below $1 as bulk 50 disk duplicator spindles are now widely available.
Today blank media for the BD recorder is widely available. Reading recorded BD-R achieves 25MB/s or more easily. Binders that hold 256 disks are low cost and storage units are available with room for 1000 disks.
Some people use BD-R for movies which is fine on modern entertainment systems. Most movies in the media rack are dual layer discs which afford more bandwidth for the feature film.
Video cameras today widely shoot Full HD which can be edited and printed to BD for viewing on a television entertainment system.
Today 25GB, 50GB, 100GB, 128GB BD sizes are all readily available. Drives like the LG WH16NS60 can handle all of the formats easily. Consumer media binders are usually safe from damage.
25GB SINGLE LAYER
The lowest cost 25GB discs are widely available on duplicator spindles of 25. A spindle of 100 discs currently is $75 and up depending on the brand. I use BD-R 25GB for backups as recorded disks are immune to ransomware. BAckups of important data is best with BD as the media is designed for durability.
50GB DUAL LAYER
Spindles of 50 disks are widely available and they currently are $99 for 50GB blanks. Just a couple of years ago these were hard to find even in 10 disc packs. Spindles of 100 discs should appear in short order.
100GB TRIPLE LAYER
The exotic triple layer disks achieve 100GB. This capacity for 2-3 major motion pictures on a single disk.Recording triple layer media is slower than single or double layer types. Spindles of 20 disks are readily available. Spindles of 50 discs should be available in a few years.
128GB QUADRUPLE LAYER
The 128GB BD-R achieves the maximum capacity for the BD-R drives in contemporary use. Spindles of 10 blank discs are available but prices are relatively high. Over time spindles of 25 should emerge followed by 50 disc spindles.
DVD media is now widely sold on spindles of 100 discs. Dual layer DVD spindles of 50 sell for $21 and the low cost single layer disks are $16.50 for a spindle of 100 discs.
