The new Psion PS5018-E18 is a PCIe 4.0 NAND controller.Psion claims that their new controller can exceed 7GB/s bidirectional. Earlier Phison released the PS5016-E16 PCIe Gen 4.0 x4 controller in 2019 and it was capable of delivering sequential performance numbers of up to 5.0 GB/s read and 4.4 GB/s write. Now the E18 is poised to being higher performance to M.2 SSD products.
Psion has been making the PS5018-E18 on the TSMC 12nm line which should keep the heat under control. When fully utilized, the eight-channel E18 delivers up to 1 million IOPS and scales to a massive 8TB capacity.
The Phison E18 is compatible with the NVMe 1.4 specification and it is powered by Triple ARM Cortex R5 CPUs along with Phison’s proprietary CoXProcessor 2.0.
The new E18 should be seen in major SSD brands in 2021 as the industry tools up for higher performance SSD products.
