Seems that there is a problem in Windows renaming some files. The names are being left trimmed and intended for being organized into a directory hierarchy for easily search with Windows. What happened is that the file names were completely changed to numbered files instead of the desired filenames.

System file checks did not find any error and the disks do not show any errors. Checking Windows also showed no error. This is a defect in Windows that is reproducible with a a test machine using a fresh install of windows.

Renaming files is not that common but a lot of downloaded programs are renamed to be easier to identify. A lot of developers do not realize the downloads can be cluttered.

Using the DOS command prompt and the rename command works fine. It’s a defect with the Windows explorer.
