Reports are coming in that EA has been hacked and that source code and other assets amounting to some 780GB has been pawned. EA is a large gaming company so this has to hurt.
EA made it clear that no player data was taken. Evidently the entire haul was game sources for Frostbite and FIFA2021. EA also said this was not a ransomware attack.
The source code for the Frostbite engine could hold significant value for an unscrupulous developer willing to copy it, or for those making cheat codes and hacks for games. But it is unlikely that any mainstream competitor to EA would ever use such stolen data. It is the latest in a string of high-profile gaming company hacks.
It’s possible some small independent game studio would be able to use the Frostbite engine for a project. Game development is complex and Frostbite and its related tools are difficult to use at the best of time.
