It seems that Loot boxes are still found in several major titles. The developers use them to earn additional cash. Many free to play games use loot boxes to cover the development costs.
The typical development team has a fairly large payroll to content with. Cash coming in tends to be in bursts with a game release. A commercially success means adequate funds for keeping the lights on for a longer period of time.
Destiny 2 has a specified counter at the Tower to make in game purchases. Elsewhere the game is an action shooter with various game works in different planets. Halo: MCC does not use any loot boxes at all. Console peasants said that Halo 5 Guardians does have loot boxes.
Cyberpunk 2077 was a commercial success which make the developer a lot of cash. The updated the game several times following bug reports. No loot boxes were noticed anywhere in the campaign.
The FIFA series has been indulging in loot boxes. EA is a listed public company so earnings are needed to satisfy investors. The FIFA series are as much role playing games as anything due the gameplay elements.
