It seems that ports in China and the US are overloaded waiting on ships to come and take on their cargo. Many other ports are also backlogged. The backlog from a recent shutdown in China was simply one problem in an ocean of them. The Ever Givens problem was only one of many.

Large container ships can handle a lot of goods but there is a limit to what they can carry. So the ocean fleet of boats are constantly sailing from port to port.

Consumer demand for has risen. This has resulted in some minor shortages as some items are backordered and supplies have been slow to arrive.

The fleet of OOCL ships has grown but still more such containers ships ere being built to handle global trade.
