Blackberry said today it was decommissioning old phones. The reason is that they are moving away from being a phone company to being a software company. Blackberry was popular in the late 1990s when it was called the Crackberry as many were focused in the device instead of traffic in downtown Manhattan.

The decommissioning means devices running these legacy services and software through either carrier or Wi-Fi connections will no longer have reliable data, phone call, text message and 9-1-1 functionality.

Today Apple and Android phones now dominate the mobile market.
